Oh dear, I’ve done it again!
One shelf of my very large bookcase, (VLB) is set aside for hardback literary classics. I rather fancied having a hardback volume of the Bronte sisters’ novels. I was casually perusing Amazon when I came across a ‘collectors’ edition’ for thirty two quid. I didn’t want to pay that much, but looking on eBay I discovered a similar volume for only ten quid. Bargain! I said,’ and purchased it tout de suite. That would look handsome on my bookshelf, next to the Austen, Orwell, Wells, Doyle etc.
It arrived this morning.
It is huge.
I could screw a leg on each corner and eat my dinner from it.
It will not fit on the shelf with the others. It is about an inch too tall. So now I will have to buy some bookends; quite big bookends, too. Who ever said reading was a cheap hobby?
But it is beautiful, and like new, an absolute bargain.
But it weighs a ton and I could go sledding on it.
I did not mention — did I? — that I already have a facsimile edition of the first draft of Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four that is the same size. Maybe I could use the pair as bookends?
