Unkindest Cuts

Not for one moment do I believe that the cuts in various services and welfare payments are because the country needs to tighten the belt.

Except by the Tories’ skewed way of thinking.

The cuts are for two reasons:

one, to build up reserves to spend on measures that we don’t need, primarily tax cuts and bailouts to the banks, but also to keep the armed forces expenditure at an unnecessarily high level and subsidise the arms industry;

two, to ratchet a future Labour government so that they are unable to spend money on progressive reforms AND reverse Tory regressive legislation without a massive tax hike – which would be unpopular with most of the electorate. There are few votes in the unemployed and disabled poor.

Britain is a very rich country, but the wealth is very unequally distributed. The current round of cuts is designed to keep it that way.
